KIRKUK, Iraq (AFP) - Iraq's northern oil hub of Kirkuk has been rocked by attacks as insurgents shot dead two contractors and blew up a Shiite mosque under construction. etc.. etc.. BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military reported the deaths of seven more soldiers Saturday, while Sunni insurgent bombers struck yet another market in a predominantly Shiite district, killing at least 13 people in their bid to terrorize Baghdad days before a U.S.-Iraqi military crackdown. The latest market attack capped a week in which more than 150 people, mostly Shiites, were slain in bomb attacks. Death squads, believed to be primarily Shiite militiamen, continued their butchery on the other side of Iraq's deepening sectarian divide, with police reporting the discovery of 40 bodies dumped in Baghdad alone. Two of the victims were women and most of the bodies showed signs of torture, police said. Baghdad, Iraq - A hidden bomb ripped through a tanker carrying chlorine gas Tuesday, Killing nine people and filling hospital beds with more than 150 wheezing and frightened villagers after noxious plumes covered homes and schools north of Baghdad.  The attack was part of a string of blasts including a suicide bomber who killed seven mourners at a funeral that further rattled officials marking the first week of a major security crackdown seeking to calm the city, etc.. Flooding closes highway in Nebraska, forces evacuation of homes

Floodwaters have closed state Highway 12 west of Niobrara in northeast Nebraska and forced the evacuations of several dozen homes west of Omaha. The National Weather Service extended its flood warning Friday for Knox, Cuming and Stanton counties, citing overflows from the Elkhorn River and various creeks. It said the flooding likely will continue until the ice flushes out and reported water level fluctuations ranging from 1 to 6 feet across eastern Nebraska. etc.. and the news story continues..

DENVER, Colorado (AP) -- A large, fast-moving snowstorm closed sections of major highways in the Plains on Saturday and threatened to dump more than a foot of snow on the Upper Midwest. Interstate 70, a major cross-country route, was closed for about 200 miles in both directions from just east of Denver to Colby, Kansas, because of blowing snow and slippery pavement, according to Colorado and Kansas highway officials. Between Denver and the beginning of the highway closure, about 35 cars collided in a pileup in whiteout conditions Saturday morning on an icy section of I-70. No major injuries were reported. Iraq bombs kill 22 as attack on VP probed

BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq's relentless insurgent bombing campaign claimed at least 22 more victims Tuesday as police probing an attempt on the life of the Shiite vice president interrogated government employees. In the bloodiest bomb attack of the day, a suicide bomber rammed a truck into the Sheikh Fathi police station in the main northern city of Mosul and detonated explosives, killing at least six policemen, police said. Around 25 people were wounded, including civilian bystanders, and the building was all but destroyed, officers told AFP. A spate of bomb and mortar attacks in and around Baghdad slaughtered 16 more people, including two civilians killed when a hidden bomb ripped through a budget restaurant frequented by Shiite labourers. Negotiating isn't always done in words. Sunday, Iran launched a suborbital rocket, a day before the Security Council was to weigh more sanctions on Iran's nuclear enrichment. Was this a shot across the West's bow? Or partly a warm-up for striking a deal? At the least, the 94-mile-high launch was a wake-up call about Iran's potential as a global military player, much like Russia's 1957 Sputnik launch escalated the cold war and started the space race. The rocket itself, perhaps built with North Korean help, could be converted within a few years to a type that delivers a warhead 3,000 miles away. Science Daily — One of the planet's most remote and little-understood features may play a crucial role in transporting ice from the remote interior of Antarctica towards the surrounding ocean, according to a new research. Geophysicists Robin Bell and Michael Studinger from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, a part of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, led a team that discovered four large, subglaical lakes that for the first time the link these water bodies locked beneath miles of ice, to fast flowing ice streams in Antarctica. Together with colleagues from NASA, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Washington, the scientists found that, in four separate cases, lakes appear to contribute to the formation of ice streams. etc.. etc.. etc.. Moreover, their work suggests that subglacial lakes could play a role in and sea level rise as well as regional and global climate change. Broadcast tower under construction in Camden Co. collapses during storm

A local television broadcaster suffered a setback in their progress towards upgrading their system when the transmission tower that was being constructed to carry their digital broadcast signal collapsed.  WSKY-TV, which broadcasts on channel 4 in the Hampton Roads area has been erecting the new tower near South Mills in Camden County, NC, on the North Carolina/Virginia border.  Glenn Holterhouse, President and General Manager of WSKY, said that the tower was about three weeks from completion. Beleaguered Zimbabwe tobacoo farmers head for early sales

HARARE (AFP) - Zimbabwe's beleaguered tobacco farmers, once a mainstay of the economy, will troop into town this week for the annual sales a month early in a bid to beat the impact of the galloping inflation rate. Two earthquakes rock east Indonesia, no casualties

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Two earthquakes hit eastern Indonesian regions on Sunday, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, a meteorological official said. A moderate earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck Papua province at 11:24 a.m. (0224 GMT), said an official at the National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency. It was centered 147 km (91 miles) northwest of the provincial capital, Jayapura, at a depth of 78 km, the official said. BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi insurgents used two children as cover to get through a checkpoint in Baghdad and then blew up the car while the kids were still inside, a U.S. general said Tuesday. The car went through a checkpoint Sunday and parked by a market across the street from a school, said Maj. Gen. Michael Barbero, deputy director for regional operations in the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Two adults jumped from the car, leaving the children in the back. Moments later, the car exploded, witnesses said. Attacks in Iraq Kill More Than 45

BAGHDAD, March 24 -- More than 45 Iraqis were killed and dozens injured in suicide bombings across Iraq on Saturday, officials said, as insurgents stepped up their offensives against the Iraqi police and military. The deadliest attack took place in Baghdad when a suicide bomber managed to get a truck loaded with construction materials -- and explosives -- past a checkpoint and into the parking lot of a Dora neighborhood police station, where construction work was being done. Hamilton County - Spring flooding is still causing problems north of the Circle City. It began Friday, but many trouble spots became even more troubled Saturday morning. etc.. etc.. Blasts hit markets in Shiite areas of Baghdad

Baghdad - Five suicide bombers struck Shiite market places in northeast Baghdad and a town north of the capital at nightfall Thursday, killing at least 122 people and wounding more than 150 in one of Iraq's deadliest days in years. etc.. etc.. Milk may do a body good, but it's putting a strain on the wallet lately.  Retail milk prices increased locally and across the country since January, and there are indications they could continue to climb next month and throughout the year.  etc.. etc.. etc.. etc.. The milk price increase is due to two factors, Krupke said.  Farmers are being paid more for their raw milk.  Krupke said the cost for powdered milk has skyrocketed because of high demand from Third World countries.  The price of powered milk is used to calculate the price farmers are paid for their milk. etc.. etc..
